080. Nick Saban and Pete Carroll: How to Create Successful Programs and People
Saturday Jan 23, 2021
Saturday Jan 23, 2021
Learn about the backgrounds, personalities, coaching styles, and philosophies of coaches Nick Saban and Pete Carroll that have enabled them to win at the highest levels of their professions.
After watching Nick Saban in an Aflac commercial, Rich wondered what Nick Saban is like. Why does he keep winning championships? He's clearly highly effective. What is it? While we're at it, why not learn about Pete Carroll too!
"Saban: The Making of a Coach" by Monte Burke reads more like a biography. It's more detailed and thorough. "Win Forever" is more instructional and a quick jolt of inspiration.
Also mentioned: "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson. Watch Rich's video on YouTube recapping the book on the BOOKS playlist or listen to episode 062 of this podcast.

Cemeteries are straightforward. We know what their purpose is. Does that make us avoid them? We have no problem watching true crime shows or confronting mortality through other mediums on our screens. What's the difference? What kind of thoughts emerge by taking the time to walk through a cemetery? A reflection on the experience.

Dear Theo is comprised of letters Van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo. We know the value of of his paintings today, but what inspired him to create them? Why do they stand out from others? Reading this book will provide insight into the artist's soul and life. It can teach us how to see the beauty and inspiration in everyday life and challenge us to live our lives to the fullest. Gratitude can help us more than we think.

How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier.
Would recommend this book to anyone interested in urban planning, community building, community organizing, real estate, government, or just want a stronger understanding of the history of why cities succeed.
People run the world. People live in cities. People are the greatest assets of cities. It's important to understand why people choose to live where they do. Attract the right kind of people to help grow and strengthen communities.

074. Brother Ray: Seeing the Soul of the World
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
The autobiography of Ray Charles was the last book I read in 2020 and it might be the most inspiring and entertaining. He was a legend. What a comet of a person whose light Earth was lucky to experience. I cannot express enough how awesome this dude was.
Ray Charles is an example of someone understanding what he was born to do and went after it. No excuses. No feeling sorry for hisself. He certainly could have. Everyone would understand. But he didn’t. He found a way.
Life is short. We know we have to figure out why we’re here and then do it. Pay attention to that internal flame. If Ray Charles could do it, so can we.
